Harlem Week 2006: '...And Still...We Rise!'
On August 19th, and 20th, HARLEM WEEK invites everyone to take part in one of New York City’s most exciting weekends, beginning with the annual “Uptown Saturday Nite” music festival. This all-day celebration consists of a plethora of exciting events as attendees take to the streets of Harlem, enjoying outdoor cultural arts, crafts, exotic foods and live entertainment along West 135th St. btw. Malcolm X Blvd. and St. Nicholas Ave. The Children’s Festival comes alive on Uptown Saturday Nite. It features a petting zoo, story-tellers, interactive arts, fashion shows and other entertainment, all with a strong emphasis on education and achievement. Uptown Saturday Nite also features The National Historic Black College Fair & Expo, where students and families discover various colleges and financial options for attending them.
Sunday, August 20th, is HARLEM DAY and the good times continue. The proceeding day’s entertainment stages and Children’s Festival remain on 135th Street, along with the addition of the 17th Annual Upper Manhattan Auto Show which includes a display of cars from antiques to 2005 preview models; The NYC Health Fair & Expo with free health information and screenings, and the annual “Flava” fashion show. Throughout the weekend, attendees will have the opportunity to support the festival’s fundraising efforts to improve life for both Harlemites and New Orleanians.
From August 22 until early September, Harlem spices things up as some of the neighborhood’s famous restaurants and eateries offer “A Taste of Harlem”. During this time, patrons can enjoy the full flavor of the community with a variety of delectable dishes at the special reduced price of $20.06.
If HARLEM WEEK only accomplished giving people a sense of pride and enjoyment, that alone would be a worthy feat; however, HARLEM WEEK does that while also addressing other community needs. With the support of sponsors and both public and elected officials, HARLEM WEEK, Inc. has been a proponent for advancing education by giving grants to educational organizations, and scholarships to thousands of students who work diligently inside the classroom and in the community. Scholarships and grants are presented at virtually every HARLEM WEEK, Harlem Jazz & Music Festival event. HARLEM WEEK also hosts events focused on economic development and on the welfare of Senior Citizens. Perhaps this is why mayors, governors, senators, members of congress, foreign leaders, and other inspirational figures, have opted to address HARLEM WEEK audiences over the years.
HARLEM WEEK invites you to come discover the treasures of a proud community. Discover Harlem. For further information about the excitement and culture that is HARLEM WEEK, visit to www.harlemdiscover.com.
