"Out of Leftovers" is a new informal performance series at Symphony Space that is prepared to quash several pains at once -- a hunger for live music in the neighborhood, a hunger for a tasty meal, and sheer exhaustion. If you're an Upper West Side family with kids, chances are that your weekends are filled with birthday parties, sports leagues and music recitals. By Sunday afternoon your refrigerator is empty and everyone is wiped. This is our reality, too, and we're going to fix it. On two First Sundays in April and May (April 7 and May 5), we are piloting "Out of Leftovers" at Bar Thalia, the cafe & bar inside Symphony Space, at the corner of 95th and Broadway. The cafe opens at 5pm and we will fill the room with music at 5:30. There is a very tasty menu (go look!) as well as beer, wine and cocktails available. The music is free -- your donations are greatly appreciated -- and seating is available on a first come, first served basis. The series is being curated by Ljova (a.k.a. Lev Zhurbin), the Russian-born composer and performer and long-time Upper West Sider. Ljova has composed music for Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, the City of London Sinfonia and The Louisville Orche... (read more)

Life's Women - New-York Historical Society
October 06, 2019 - New York

LIFE's Women features more than 80 images showcasing the extraordinary work created by those six staff photographers: Margaret Bourke-White, Hansel Mieth, Marie Hansen, Martha Holmes, Nina Leen, and Lisa Larsen.

Doings of Gotham: Edgar Allan Poe in New York City - Merchant's House Museum
October 07, 2019 - New York

With Andrea Janes, Founder, Boroughs of the Dead Edgar Allan Poe was part of a far-reaching web of writers, newspapermen, editors, critics, and other influential New Yorkers who touched on many facets of life in the antebellum metropolis. Boroughs of the Dead founder and author Andrea Janes will explore Poe’s New York framed by his own writings, such as his Doings of Gotham, which chronicled current events in the city in 1844, including the newly opened Croton aqueduct and the changing architecture of Brooklyn (spoiler: he didn’t love it). Also discussed: The Balloon-Hoax, the Mystery of Marie Roget, The Facts in the Case of M Valdemar, and The Raven. Janes will also delve into some of Poe’s myriad interests: phrenology and mesmerism as well as true crime, murder, and scandal. Along the way, she will address and clarify myths and urban legends. Was it really the cellar of what is now the restaurant Il Buco on Bond Street that inspired Poe to write The Cask of Amontillado? Did Poe become addicted to opium after a visit to The Northern Dispensary on Waverly Place? Join us – and find out.

Cargill: don't let the Amazon burn - Intercontinental New York Barclay
October 07, 2019 - New York

The Amazon is on fire, and we know who’s to blame. It’s Cargill. A new report by Mighty Earth found that Cargill’s activities are centrally linked to the incineration of the Amazon. On October 7, the Wall Street Journal is interviewing Cargill’s Senior Vice President Ruth Kimmelshue at the Intercontinental New York Barclay. We’re showing up because we need to tell the full story. Agribusiness giant Cargill is sourcing its animal feed from South America. Not only have they failed to take action to combat deforestation, this year they actually sent a letter to their suppliers specifically to **encourage** them to continue clearing forests. Five years ago, Cargill pledged to cut ties to deforestation by 2020. This year the company openly admitted they will not be following through on that commitment. We do not have another 5 years. We don’t have another one year. Cargill must act now. *** TIME: 7:45 AM SIGNUP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cargill-dont-let-the-amazon-burn-tickets-72727432709 SPEAKERS: speakers to include Abby Stein, activist and author of 'Becoming Eve'

Who Run the World? (Women of the Middle Ages) - Elective Downtown
October 08, 2019 - New York

Join us for a pop-up lecture on history. Before anyone ever nevertheless persisted, and way before anyone sang God is a Woman, there were the women of the Middle Ages. She then received her Masters in Medieval European History with a secondary concentration in War and Society from USM. Being In Your Body - Housing Works Bookstore Cafe & Bar
October 08, 2019 - New York

The Eating Instinct visits kitchen tables around America to tell Virginia Sole-Smith's own story, as well as the stories of women recovering from weight loss surgery, of people who eat only nine foods, of families with unlimited grocery budgets and those on food stamps. John Dowland - Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares & several dances - The Svenska Church 5 East 48th Street, Manhattan
October 11, 2019 - New York

Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans and several other dances by John Dowland Bacheler of Musicke There is no doubt that one of the most popular melodies associated with the Elizabethan period is John Dowland’s setting of “Lachrimae” or “Flow My Teares.” The descending 4-note motive has, over time, come to symbolize sadness and melancholy and has been adopted by composers who flourished in the Renaissance period through the modern age. Dowland published his collection, “Lachrimae or Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans,” around 1605 when he was in the service of the King of Denmark, Christian IV. He dedicated the collection to Christian’s sister Anne who, upon her marriage to James I, became Queen of Scotland, England, and Ireland. “The seven pavans that begin Lachrimæ are among the best-known and best-loved pieces of instrumental music written before the eighteenth century. Their serene beauty speaks for itself, yet they also raise many questions. Why are there seven of them? How are they related? Do they contain ideas borrowed from other composers? Were they intended to be performed as a cycle? What is the significance of the Latin t... (read more)

Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 11, 2019 - New York

I make objects from cardboard and clay. My work, however, is heavily rooted in the practice of drawing. Drawing is a linear tool—a tangible way to investigate, think and visually translate an idea into space. It is a generative process that propels my explorations from description to interpretation and abstraction where new questions and possibilities arise. A line can manifest itself in a myriad of ways from the simple to the abstruse. Clay is liberating as a drawing material. The material is the structure, the line itself. With cardboard, the line is often created by an intense infrastructure that demarcates where two planes almost meet. As a maker, I oscillate between translating line through negative space and drawing out loud in three dimensions. These two distinct approaches yield sculptural work in cardboard and clay that is seemingly disparate yet exploit the buoyancy of line and a commitment to hand building. They operate like dialects of a language. They speak to each other, and most often run parallel, but I always await their collision.

Symposium: The Man Who Changed both the American Education and the Chinese Education – On the Centennial of John Dewey's Historical Visit to China - Downtown Office
October 12, 2019 - New York

One of the greatest philosophers and educators of our times, John Dewey (1859-1952) is viewed by both his advocates and critics as the father of progressive education. A creative and prolific thinker, he was credited for having changed the American education. In 1919, at the invitation of his former Chinese students at Columbia University, Dewey embarked on a trip to China, which would forever change the direction of education in the Middle Kingdom. He initially intended to spend two or three months in China, but ended up staying more than two years there. During his stay in China, he travelled across 11 provinces and gave more than 200 lectures to enthusiastic audiences at various education institutions. His philosophical and educational thought exerted an enormous influence on education in China so much so that it is still felt today. Shortly after he returned from China, he helped found China Institute, the first cultural and educational institution in the U.S., with Pingwen Kuo, Hu Shi and Paul Monroe (Director of the School of Education at Columbia's Teachers' College) to disseminate information about Chinese culture and Chinese education. On the centennial of John Dewey's ... (read more)

Tyrone Wells - The Lift Me Up Tour - Rockwood Music Hall 2
October 12, 2019 - New York

This event is 21 and over Tyrone Wells still sort of chuckles to himself when he thinks about the fact that making music is his "job." He has been at this "job" for well over a decade, and is just now beginning to shake off the discomfort and stress of the days when he had a real job (TJ Maxx - lead of the ladies department in Spokane, WA). As far as jobs go, Tyrone feels like he has won the lottery (in regards to his present "job"). He loves to create music. He loves to perform. He is a husband, and a father of 3 daughters. He has four sisters, so he feels right at home being completely outnumbered by the ladies in his present household (and also when he was the lead of the ladies dept at TJ Maxx). He believes that Jesus is for real. He's writing this bio. He's referring to himself in the third person. He knows that this bio has a ring of sarcasm, but he is dead serious. He feels extremely grateful. He jokes around, but he has worked very hard at making music his "job."

Breaking the Plane, Shannon Goff, Peter Christian Johnson, Lauren Mabry - Jane Hartsook Gallery
October 13, 2019 - New York

"Ludwig and Bertie" by Douglas Lackey, directed by Alexander Harrington, takes on the forty-year love/hate relationship between Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, two leading twentieth-century philosophers, from their first meeting at Cambridge in 1911 to Wittgenstein's death in 1951. Russell is heterosexual, hedonistic and agnostic; Wittgenstein is puritanical, gay and Jewish.  Russell is an imprisoned pacifist; Wittgenstein a decorated combat soldier. Wittgenstein is intensely religious; Russell mocks religion from first to last.  Wittgenstein regards Russell as his "mental father," but their relationship has elements of rivalry. In Lackey’s telling, Wittgenstein's thinking kindles the demolition of facts in our post-truth world while Russell's inspires the National Science Foundation. This play will show you how.

Singin' in the E.R. - Theater for the New City
Through October 13, 2019 - MANHATTAN

Sometimes a trip to the Emergency Room is so awful that it's just made for Theater of the Ridiculous. That's the premise of "Singin' in the E.R.," the newest musical by Ruby Lynn Reyner, a star of John Vaccarro's Playhouse of the Ridiculous who has been called a female Jerry Lewis. The piece is inspired by ordeals in a New York City hospital suffered by the author and her husband. Now she believes that the only way to deal with such life-changing experiences is through unrestrained, exorbitant laughter. The play was written from actual experiences, but they are transformed with outrageous satire. The setting is a fictional hospital in the dark world of medical mishaps. A variety of songs, all in rock 'n roll style, are nestled among outrageous scenes with such mind-bending events as arms falling off, crashes with the crash cart and fitting a woman's ass to a sling. One of the songs, "Biggest Balls in Town," was written by Reyner and the late Jackie Curtiss; the others are by Reyner alone.

In this disquieting production, the tormented Tom (de Rogatis) relives the story of his time in the Wingfields St. Louis apartment, circa 1939, as if he were remembering it through the lens of a spooky dream. The cast, led by Ginger Grace as the iconic Amanda Wingfield, consists of Matt de Rogatis as her son Tom Wingfield, Alexandra Rose as Laura Wingfield, and Spencer Scott as The Gentleman Caller. Set designer Jessie Bonaventure, who was the assistant set designer on the Broadway musical Hadestown, which garnered four Tony Awards, including Best Scenic Design, collaborates with lighting designer Steven Wolf to create a version of this Tennessee Williams masterpiece that borders on horror. Dimly lit and surrealistic, the set itself will consist of props made of glass and the actors will live in a chilling, dreamlike... (read more)

ALCHEMY Photo Exhibit by Michel Leroy - Gallery MAX SoHo
Through October 23, 2019 - New York

ALCHEMY, featuring never before seen photos, is award-winning photographer Michel Leroy’s most defining project. His collaboration with professional athletes with varying body types began in 2017, and has resulted in images that are vulnerable and explicit without sexual objectification. The photos are notable for the tactile permanence of flesh revealed through the in-camera technique and lighting that enhance textures and brings out details unseen by the causal glance. Intentional shadowing and the ambiguous mixture of masculine and feminine posing further blur the lines between the body and identity, challenging the viewers to question their assumptions. By emphasizing form over identity, Leroy seduces the viewer with insights that reveal empathy and acceptance for the physical similarities of the human body over individual differences.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, August 29, 6 to 8 pm, and will be on view through to November 1, 2019. For her first solo exhibition in New York, artist Minerva Cuevas presents a body of video work that makes concise connections between the consequences of dominant economic ideologies and urgent, global ecological and social issues. Gathering eight video installations and projections, Disidencia (Dissent) brings together a range of visual strategies that Cuevas has deployed to engage with such topics as the decay of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, corporate America’s insatiable brand of globalization, and a video cartography of protests and resistance throughout her home city. At a time when divisive politics are on the rise and deregulation and privatization seem almost unavoidable, Cuevas shows us an alternative to such dangers and empowers our own social relations. “Titled after one of Cuevas’s emblematic works, Disidencia serves to establish opposition and active contestation,” explains Gabriel Bogossian, who has co-curated the exhibition alongside Solange Farkas, dire... (From the Sea, Freedom!). TERRA FIRMA was originally a commission for the Royal Court Theatre, the premiere venue for new writing in the UK. Featuring Andrus Nichols (Sense & Sensibility), T. Ryder Smith (Oslo), John Keating (Irish Rep’s The Shadow of a Gunman), and Gerardo Rodriguez (The Blacklist).

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs - Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 - New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia. Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection).... (read more)

THE EMPTY BOX (Gospel Musical Stage Play) - Oberia D. Dempsey Theater
Through December 14, 2019 - New York

The gospel musical stage play THE EMPTY BOX sheds light on the merging of two families with different perceptions, belief systems and levels of faith. Paris was taught to see only what is directly in front of her. Because she comes from a privileged family that gives her everything that she wants, she has not learned the power in prayer or faith. She was comfortable with her life until she met the smart, kind and handsome Bryson Robbins. Bryson’s story is different from Paris’ in that his family could not offer him financial wealth but rather taught him the importance of having a relationship with God. Bryson’s struggles has made him a prayer warrior, a dreamer and allows him to see what others do not. Watch as this couple along with their families try to bridge their different beliefs. It is possible, that the powerful experience of faith which normally binds people together, may actually tear these two families apart.

Using the materiality of print and handmade paper, the two- and three-dimensional works in this exhibition speak to cross-cultural and deeply embedded global struggles. Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 05, 2020 - Manhattan

After Aida in 1871, except for occasional projects, Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), Italy's pre-eminent composer, retired from opera at the age of 58. This, however, did not prevent constant pleas from his publisher, Giulio Ricordi (1840–1912), and his future librettist, Arrigo Boito (1842–1918), for the maestro to return to the operatic stage. Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 12, 2020 - Manhattan

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent's sitters on canvas. The first major exhibition to explore the artist's expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal will recognize the sheer scale of Sargent's achievement as a portrait draftsman. Important international loans, from both public and private collections, will showcase Sargent's sitters, many of them famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. The exhibition will also explore the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent's practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America.

Guercino: Virtuoso Draftsman - The Morgan Library & Museum

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice. Following his career, a range of preparatory drawings includes studies made in connection with his earliest altarpieces as well as his mature masterpieces, including multiple studies for several projects, allowing the visitor to see Guercino's mind at work as he reconsidered his ideas. The Morgan's holdings also include studies for engravings, as well as highly finished landscape and figure drawing... (read more)

Picasso's Le Tricorne - New-York Historical Society
Through December 31, 2020 - Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection. Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet. Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict... (read more)
