Mi Abuela: Queen of Nightmares
Come join the audience for the premiere of "Mi Abuela, Queen of Nightmares," an award-winning play by playwright/filmmaker/writer/artist/actress Christine Stoddard. The play will run 10 performances from June 15-26 at Gene Frankel Theatre in Manhattan, New York. Tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite. Maya, a young Salvadoran-American woman, navigates a treacherous terrain of adolescence, personal trauma, and uncovering buried family mythology through magic and folklore as she comes of age in Phoenix, Arizona. Her story explores mother-daughter relationships, mixed race identity, and fantasy as a coping mechanism, while featuring the movement and dance talents of our dynamic cast. Maya's physically present yet psychologically unavailable mother, Mami, is overcome with residing grief over her deceased mother's unfortunate passing long before Maya was born. Maya must combat the limited quantity of attention she receives with escapism, strength, and self-discovery to fill in this gap. This experimental piece incorporates traditional Spanish folk songs and dancing, brought to life with live singing performances by our leaders actors.
