Front Page Story: Nathan Lane, John Goodman & John Slattery to Star in The Front Page Revival on Broadway

I guess it’s only fair the “hot off the presses” first alert on The Front Page’s return to Broadway went to The Chicago Tribune. After all, the 1928 Ben Hecht-Charles MacArthur classic play is set in the rumpled, smoke-filled newsroom of a Windy City newspaper back in the day. But now that the word is out—make that unleashed—let’s run with it here in NYC where The Front Page will begin previews on Broadway in September (official opening is set for October 20th, 2016).

Jefferson Mays and Sherie Rene Scott set to join the cast of the revival of The Front Page.

And the cast in the lingo of the day is “a doozy,” starting with Tony winner Nathan Lane in the role of irascible editor Walter Burns and following with John Slattery (Spotlight; Mad Men) stepping into the role of hotshot reporter Hildy Johnson. (FYI to those only familiar with the ’40s film version in which Rosalind Russell played Hildy, the stage original was in fact written for a guy; actor Pat O’Brien was the first film Hildy in 1931.)

As for other cast members announced to date, they include Tony winners Rosemary Harris and Jefferson Mays, Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott, and John Goodman (Roseanne), last seen on Broadway with Lane in Roundabout Theatre’s 2009 production of Waiting for Godot.

Directing will be Tony winner Jack O’Brien (The Coast of Utopia), who reunites with Scott, who starred in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (another Tony on his mantle), and Lane, whom he directed in The Nance(2013), while Scott Rudin—one of only a handful of people to ever have scored the big four (Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy) has signed on as producer.

The Front Page is slated for a limited run through February 5th, 2017 with additional cast, creative, and theatre TBA.
