Lunar New Year Cocktail Feast

A glamorous ‘cocktail feast’ in celebration of the Lunar New Year, hosted by Danielle Chang’s LUCKYRICE is to take place at Chinese Tuxedo and its downstairs lounge, Peachy’s, in New York City on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Chinese Tuxedo’s historic and architecturally stunning space (home to an opera house in the early 1900s) will be transformed with hundreds of red lanterns and feature several 30-foot paper dragons suspended over the main dining room.

Eight unique and Lunar New Year-inspired Rémy Martin cocktails will be served with a selection of eight passed hors d'oeuvres as eight has long been regarded as the luckiest number in Chinese culture. ‘The 88’ will even be listed on the cocktail menu as an ode to the lucky number. On offer are symbolic dishes that are auspicious to the Lunar New Year such as dumplings in the shape of gold ingots; longevity noodles to represent a long life; and a tangerine dessert, the fruit representing fullness and wealth.

"The most well-known Chinese foods that bring wealth and prosperity are dumplings — or 'Jiaozi'," notes Danielle Chang, Founder and CEO of LUCKYRICE. "Jiao zi resemble ancient currency, or ingots, and legend has it that the more 'meat purses' you indulge in at midnight, the more money you’ll make in the coming year. Sometimes, we will actually stuff coins into random dumplings so a chance encounter while eating one of these dumplings will bring the promise of prosperity."

Each year, the Chinese New Year commencement varies based on the cycles of the moon. Once the festivities start, the celebration lasts for about two weeks. In traditional Asian culture, the holiday is observed with friends and families around propitious foods that lend good luck for the year to come during this time.

In 2020, the Lunar New Year kicks off the Year of the Rat. The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals and represents new beginnings as well as a strong vitality in Chinese culture because rats are known to have high fertility and a high survival rate. One of the listed drinks on the cocktail menu will be titled ‘The Lucky Rat” to honor the upcoming new year in the Chinese Zodiac cycle.

The host of the evening, LUCKYRICE, is a lifestyle brand founded by acclaimed entrepreneur and media personality Danielle Chang a decade ago in New York and is widely credited with bringing Asian culture to the forefront of global discussions through the lens of food. This year has been an extremely important one to Chang as it is the brand’s 10 year anniversary. Chang has been busy this year touring her signature “Night Market of the Future” experiences across the country, bringing together each city’s most innovative street food to offer a glimpse into what we’ll be eating tomorrow. She’s also been working as the creator and host of “LUCKYCHOW,” an award-winning national PBS show currently in production for Season 4. As the Lunar New Year is her favorite holiday, she makes sure to go above and beyond and considers it a “full process” when preparing for the annual observance. Chang is delighted to pair with Chinese Tuxedo and Rémy Martin for this event and hopes to educate more people to understand the traditions and symbols of the Chinese New Year.
