Inside Scoop: Carnegie Hall

Inspired by a chance meeting between Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie and the conductor of the Oratorio Society of New York, Walter Damrosch, Carnegie Hall opened in New York City in 1891. Today it is comprised of three spaces: Stern Auditorium, Zankel Hall, and Weill Recital Hall. Leaning toward the more classical side of entertainment, performers here have included contralto Marian Anderson, The Beatles (twice in 1964), and The New York Philharmonic. Recent concerts have covered everything from jazz to experimental to world music. Programming is excellent here, meaning you have a very good chance of seeing some top-caliber musicianship no matter what day you visit.
