6 Great Restaurants for Seasonal Eating in the Flatiron District

Summer dining doesn’t just mean eating outdoors. The warm months usher in a new array of fruits, vegetables, and proteins to showcase on your dinner plate. The Flatiron District, which boasts some of the city’s top restaurants, features several seasonally minded spots with new menus for the season. Here are six places to enjoy summer eats in the Flatiron, like seasonal fish, pork belly with strawberries, and juicy tomatoes.

Obicà

Obica Pizza with Piennolo Cherry Tomato

Try Obica's new seasonal pizza, topped with Piennolo cherry tomatoes, native to the slopes of the volcano Vesuvius.

Pizza with fresh, seasonal mozzarella? Yes, please. The worldwide chain Obicà puts quality seasonal ingredients first with their range of shareable Italian dishes. Their signature ingredient is mozzarella, served in four varieties imported from the Campania region of Italy. At both New York locations (one in the Flatiron, the other in midtown), there’s an all-new menu for summer. Try dishes like the Burrata Burger with bacon and avocado, or the buffalo roast beef salad with crunchy vegetables, mâche, and Datterini tomatoes. Among the house's many small plates is the new millefoglie for the season, a pile of thinly sliced vegetables made with Casatica di Bufala mozzarella. You might also share a Salmone Selvaggio pizza, topped with wild fennel and lemon. A brand new seasonal ingredient is the Piennolo cherry tomato, native to the slopes of the volcano Vesuvius. Find this fresh, bright tomato on crostini, spaghettoni with mozzarella, and pizza. 928 Broadway, 212-777-2754, obica.com

ABC Kitchen

Celebrated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten helms the three restaurants inside home goods emporium ABC Carpet & Home. ABC Kitchen is the cornerstone of this trio and a fantastic way to get sensational seasonal ingredients in a designer’s dream dining room. The Italian-leaning menu features whole wheat pizzas with market veggie toppings like squash blossom and sungold tomato, plus housemade pasta like campanelle with spring peas and pesto. There are also several seasonal seafood dishes, particularly on the appetizer menu, and market radishes as a veggie-lover’s appetizer. 35 E. 18th St., 212-475-5829, abchome.com

SERRA Fiorita by Birreria

Serra Fiorita

Soak up the summer sun at a rooftop garden! SERRA Fiorita by Birreria is the seasonal pop-up on the roof of the Italian-food emporium that is Eataly. The seasonally minded menu at SERRA lists ingredients from a range of regional producers, and several herbs you’ll be enjoying are grown on premises. Summer-y offerings include a range of spritz cocktails like the Spritz Bianco (made with in-house basil), regional prosciutto and cheese, and scallopine di pollo with regional chicken and market radish. 200 Fifth Ave., 14th Floor, 212-937-8910, eataly.com

Cosme

Cosme has recently made news, rising up to #25 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Cosme, headed by Chefs Enrique Olvera and Daniela Soto-Innes, serves a novel take on Mexican cuisine in a chic, understated dining room on East 21st. Among its outstanding offerings are duck carnitas braised in Mexican Coca-Cola, cobia served al pastor, and a vegetarian take on the Oaxacan tetela made with beets and hazelnut butter. Various seasonal ingredients come from Hudson Valley farms and show up everywhere from the craft cocktail menu to the top of the eucalyptus cheesecake at dessert. Tables are tough to get, so reserve ASAP! 35 E. 21st St., 212-913-9659, cosmenyc.com

Gramercy Tavern

Gramercy Tavern

It doesn’t get much better than Gramercy Tavern, an excellent pick and an early Danny Meyer effort going strong since 1994. Chef Michael Anthony prepares artful seasonal cuisine in both the semi-casual tavern and the white-tablecloth dining room in the back. Right now, fresh seafood shines on the shrimp toast appetizer and grilled black bass entree in the Tavern, and the mainstay burger is always good. In the dining room, choose three courses on the prix fixe menu such as salad with beets and pea shoots, pork with ramps and strawberries, and yuzu curd with pistachio shortbread for dessert. 42 E. 20th St., 212-477-0777, gramercytavern.com

Eleven Madison Park

Rated among the World’s Best Restaurants on the same list that selected Cosme, Eleven Madison Park is another NYC fine dining essential. Chef/owner Daniel Humm presents a French-inspired tasting menu of fresh, innovative dishes that will surprise even the most devoted regulars at this elite establishment with prices to match. Every tasting menu differs by the day, and there’s slightly more casual bar option for brief tasting menus and a sample of one of the city’s great wine lists. 11 Madison Ave., 212-889-0905, elevenmadisonpark.com
