August 18, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages 21+ For the better part of a decade, Brett Davis & Sally Burtnick have hosted a monthly comedy showcase called The Macaulay Culkin* Show, despite the show not having anything to do with the actor. However, that all changes on August 18th at the 6th Annual Macaulay Culkin Show Summer Comedy Festival. After years, finally, the Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone, My Girl) has agreed to come and be a part of our show. What is he doing? We don't know. But we do know that we are continuing our tradition of showcasing a sampling of some of the most unique and hilarious acts in comedy today. And we're at The Bell House, so there's gonna be air conditioning this time.

Olivia Gatwood: The Life of the Party Book Tour - The Bell House
August 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages 18+ How does a girl grow into a woman in a world racked by violence? Where is the line between perpetrator and victim? The first time I experienced Olivia Gatwood was live at The Bell House in Brooklyn alongside 200 of her fans. Moments before Olivia started reading, the room went silent as the audience collectively took a sharp breath. The room felt electric. Lauded for the power of her writing and having attracted an online fan base of millions for her extraordinary spoken-word performances, Olivia Gatwood is a thrilling new feminist voice in poetry. In LIFE OF THE PARTY (Dial Press Trade Paperback, on sale 8/20), Gatwood weaves together her own coming of age with an investigation into our culture's romanticization of violence against women. Her precise, searing language--at times blistering and riotous, at times soulful and exuberant—explores how our experience as girls dictates how we exist in our bodies as women. Olivia Gatwood poignantly deconstructs the dark side of girlhood, violence against women, and society's obsession with true crime in this dazzling debut collection of raw and explosive poems. LIFE OF THE PARTY is as beautiful in its prose as it is powerfully ... (read more)

Dap's Den - Williamsburg Music Center
Through August 20, 2019 - Brooklyn

Jazz has a long history of being nurtured and developed in Harlem. The creativity, energy, and freedom of ideas created and exhibited there have been nothing short of legendary. Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, and Arthur Taylor (to name just a few) all credit this hallowed ground as an integral part of their success. Few embody this spirit more than Daniel “Dapper Dan” Day. Dapper Dan is a Harlem street-based pioneer who operated a boutique in the 80s known for his defiant appropriations of European heritage brands. While it took him over 30 years to be recognized for his innovations in fashion, today Dapper Dan enjoys a partnership with Gucci— one of the very brands that helped force him out of business over 20 years ago. What’s more jazz than that? Dan’s dream of having a night club never came to fruition, so in true Dapper Dan style, we’re borrowing his heritage brand to bring Harlem to Williamsburg. Welcome to Dap’s Den! Performances By: Raina Sokolov -Gonzalez, Matt Martinez and Andrew Latona, Aida Johannes and Jackson Miller

Jeremy & The Harlequins - Union Pool
August 23, 2019 - Brooklyn

This event is 21 and over Jeremy & The Harlequins n today's musical landscape inundated by cheap hooks and overproduced studio tricks, Jeremy & The Harlequins are here to keep the fire and spirit of rock'n'roll alive. That's something the New York five-piece have been doing since forming just a few short years ago, both with their debut album American Dreamer (2015) and its follow-up Into The Night (2016). They're continuing this approach with their third album in three years, entitled Remember This, which they started writing at home in New York, immediately after the recording of Into The Night. Kendra Morris Kendra Morris recalls singers who straddled soul and rock during the early '70s, such as Ruth Copeland and Chaka Khan, while her contemporaries include the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Alice Russell, and Leela James. Morris's musical taste was developed through her parents' record collection, a library heavy on late-60s and early-70s soul and funk. During her childhood Morris's main companion was her karaoke machine, which she also used for the sake of recording.

Lost Bayou Ramblers + Poguetry Feat. Spider Stacy and Cait O'Riordian - Brooklyn Bowl
August 23, 2019 - Brooklyn

The Grammy award winning Lost Bayou Ramblers' evolution as a perversely progressive band rooted in Cajun traditions continues to excite, challenge, and redefine both genre expectations as well as cultural preconceptions. Founded in 1999 by brothers Andre and Louis Michot, the last 5 years have brought LBR a feature on Jack White's American Epic, score contributions to the Oscar nominated film Beasts of the Southern Wild, a Grammy award for their latest album "Kalenda" and tours with both Arcade Fire and the Violent Femmes. Lost Bayou Ramblers stands at the crosscurrents of Louisiana culture by inhabiting the gray area between Cajun and Creole, convention and innovation, mystery and a revelation, experimenting and growing the show to what it's become today: an eclectic mix of modern sounds and rhythms with ancient Cajun melodies and lyrics. World Café says "The Grammy-winning group plays a revved-up version of Cajun music, shot through with punk energy and psychedelic fuzz."

Tainted Love 80's Dance Party - The Bell House
August 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages 21+ Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.
