NYC's Treasure Trove of Finds and Deals: Hell's Kitchen Flea Market

While you’ll find endless amounts of flea markets and antique swaps throughout New York City in the summertime, many of them disappear come the winter seasons and don’t bring their tents back out until the late spring and early summer. The Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market is a welcome exception. Open year-round (weather permitting), you can find this famed flea show happening from 9am to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday.

Located in heart of Manhattan, the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market draws in all sorts of vendors, including top-brand designers, antique collectors, vintage clothing sellers, home décor specialists, and independent jewelry makers. As for the clientele? You’ll find every sort of person here as well, from locals and tourists to celebrities and hagglers.

The Flea Market’s History

The Annex Markets originally opened in 1976 in a corner lot in Chelsea. Alan Boss, a native New Yorker, rounded up 11 vendors for the market’s first weekend, and as they say, the rest is history! One of the Annex Markets can still be found in Chelsea (West 25th St. between Broadway and Sixth Ave.) during the weekends, in addition to the Hell’s Kitchen location (West 39th St. at 9th Ave.).

What You’ll Find at The Market

Vinyl records? Check. Film cameras? You bet. Seemingly endless tables of army pins? Of course. The beauty of the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market is just how eclectic the sellers and their products are. While Miss Lee, a Hell’s Kitchen veteran vendor, is selling vintage silk scarves, estate jewelry, and other estate accessories, other vendors have the likes of vintage signage, dolls, and instruments up for perusal on their tables. African art, beads, fabric, and vintage clothing also appears frequently in the many vendor tents that line the streets on weekends — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Superhero necklaces, vintage greeting cards, fur coats, even tiny furniture have been known to show up at this weekend happening. The fact of the matter is, you never know what you’ll find at the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market.
