Nobudge Live #21 - Nitehawk Prospect Park
August 19, 2019 - Brooklyn

NoBudge is happy to present nine new narrative short films (including several NYC and Brooklyn premieres), a sampling of recent favorites from the film festival circuit and online premieres. Connected loosely around the theme of life not going as planned, this 92 minute block tends toward the comedic, but there are also moments of emotional resonance. A recently divorced father deals with the failure of his marriage in How It's Goin', while a visual artist reckons with the realities of not making enough money in the profound Unfinished,2017 (Mixed media). The lives of struggling artists are also tackled comedically in films such as Too Long at the Fair and Seven Dreams featuring performers with unusual approaches. Two films share a director (Doron Max Hagay, NoBudge Hall-of-Famer) while four take place in California, a visual nod to the summer screening. Screened with filmmakers in attendance for a post-film Q&A and Afterparty. NoBudge is an online platform spotlighting the best in low-budget indie filmmaking. "One of the best places to sample what's happening in low-budget cinema worldwide," says Glenn Kenny of The New York Times. Its mission is to provide a supportive home for e... (read more)

In an attempt to regain her freedom, Clare, a 21-year-old Irish convict (Franciosi), becomes the victim of a harrowing crime at the hands of her abusive master Lieutenant Hawkins (Claflin). Determined to pursue him, she enlists the help of Billy, a young Aboriginal tracker (Ganambarr) who grudgingly agrees to take her north to track down Hawkins. Both suffering their own traumas and mutual distrust—and amid fighting between the original inhabitants of the land and its colonizers in what is now known as the Black War—Clare and Billy journey deeper into the rugged wilderness, gradually learning to find empathy for one another. Dj Broquete - Time Out Market New York,Empires Stores
August 23, 2019 - Brooklyn

Hailing from The Bronx, NY, DJ and turntablist Broquete bears a heavy amount of history on his shoulders. However, it's clear by his calmness behind the decks, and his forward thinking selections and routines, that the weight bothers him none. New DJ's are often looked upon with reservation, but Broquete quickly hushe's the naysayers and gets them grooving, weaving together genres and keeping the club on its toes with a quiet intensity. In addition to having served as DJ Soul's weekly opener at Kinfolk 94, spinning alongside the likes of Nick Hook and Nick Catchdubs, and rocking underground parties all over NYC, Broquete is the don of Smooth Tings, a fast-growing party that exclusively features world music and club music. With a strong passion and unique approach to the art, it's clear that Broquete is here to stay and rise above the pretenders in the DJ world.Dose" which airs bi-weekly. Vada has traveled to play for crowds in DC, Miami, and Orlando (where she's originally from) and truly knows how to get people up and moving with her music. She has performed at multiple venues in New York and LA including Soho House, The W Hotel, and more.

Tainted Love 80's Dance Party - The Bell House
August 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

Ages 21+ Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.

August 24, 2019 - Brooklyn

Directed by Dennis Hopper, Easy Rider shows the real and metaphorical journey of two bikers Captain America and Billy (Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper) as they travel from Los Angeles to Florida. And although the tagline says that it's about "a man who went looking for American…but couldn't find it," it seems more dangerous to suggest that perhaps he did.

Artists-In-Residence: Jen Rosenblit, Gary Wilmes, and Simone Aughterlony - The Invisible Dog Art Center
Through August 31, 2019 - Brooklyn

n this short residency Jen Rosenblit and Gary Wilmes are invited to begin research towards a performance project initiated by Simone Aughterlony, titled Remaining Strangers. Pursuing our conceptions and affections of and for 'the stranger', this research takes emphasis on hospitality and endurance as it relates to locality and the necessity in times of hyper globalization to, in a sense, land back on earth. What would coming back to earth mean? How can we readopt the notion of locality, wherever that may be at any one time, beyond ideas of nationalism, borders, entitlement and ownership. In short, how can we ground ourselves in the local rather than in pursuit of a globalized future that can clearly only sustain the privileged few. Seeking to complicate the distinction between the guest—host relation through the proximity of bodies and sharing of ideas and materials, we recover a temporary and liminal place that spans and simultaneously blurs distinctions between Foreign, Other, Stranger, and Community. Reactionary positioning of the unknown or the foreign tells us it remains a crucial moment to begin countering the polemic of hostility by investing in the disappearing practice of ... (read more)
