American Psycho will be bowing out of its Broadway run on June 5th after 81 performances, mixed reviews and not enough time to find its audience—admittedly an audience infatuated with theatre of the perverse. Yet instead of taking a walk on Broadway’s dark side, these theatregoers are streaming Orphan Black and, sadly, sending bloody, bloody Patrick Bateman (played, at least for another week, by Benjamin Walker) into post-Broadway terra incognita. Stuff happens, sure—still it’s a shame when the plug gets pulled on a first rate cast in a show with potential. Then again, I’m not on the producing/ka-ching end of the industry.

Meanwhile, in the up-and-coming Broadway flow and dynaflow, newsy goodies are breaking through the fourth wall. In the musical sector there’s Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, heading to the Neil Simon Theatre mid July with—U.K. drumroll, please—Brit pop diva Leona Lewis as down-and-out Grizaella—the role that netted Betty Buckley a 1983 Tony, basically for her momentous belting of the song “Memory.”

And while we’re talking Cats, it should be noted that Tony-nominated Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler has signed on to update how the dancing anthropomorphized felines strut their stuff. Oh yes, original director Trevor Nunn will be returning to helm the new version. More litter box scuttlebutt to come.

Moving on to dramas, I’m loving that Steppenwolf’s Terry Kinney will be heading back to Broadway early next spring to direct a limited Roundabout run of Arthur Miller’s The Price (2/16 through 5/7). No cast has been announced for this revival—the last remounting was in 1999—but regardless of who’s playing whom, we’ll be entering a nostalgic Miller-centric minefield, in this case one dealing with family, sacrifice, regret and resentment. Timeless.
